Common Dental Emergencies We Treat
Severe Toothache Tooth pain that is sharp, throbbing, or persistent is your body signaling that something is wrong — an infection, a cracked tooth, or decay that has reached the nerve. Do not wait it out hoping it improves. Dental infections can spread and become serious quickly. Call us.
Knocked-Out Tooth A knocked-out tooth is a true time-sensitive emergency — don't wait. The tooth can often be reimplanted successfully if you act quickly. Handle it by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing. Keep it moist — in milk, in your cheek, or in a glass of water — and call us immediately while you're on your way.
Cracked or Fractured Tooth A cracked tooth may or may not hurt initially, but it needs to be evaluated quickly. Cracks can extend deeper with chewing, turning a manageable repair into a complex one or an extraction. Rinse your mouth with warm water and call us.
Lost Crown or Filling When a crown comes off or a filling falls out, the exposed tooth is vulnerable to sensitivity, cracking, and decay. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can protect the tooth until we see you — but don't let days turn into weeks. Call us, or walk in during one of our daily reserved emergency slots.
Dental Abscess An abscess is a pocket of infection at the root of a tooth or in the gums. Signs include severe pain, swelling, a bad taste in your mouth, and sometimes fever. This is a medical situation that warrants urgent care. Do not ignore swelling around a tooth — call us immediately.
Broken or Chipped Tooth A significant chip or break that exposes the inner layer of the tooth causes pain and puts the tooth at risk. Save any pieces if possible. Call us, or walk in during one of our daily reserved emergency slots.
Lost or Broken Denture If a denture breaks or becomes unwearable, we offer emergency repair and adjustment appointments. Being without your denture affects your ability to eat and speak — we treat this as an urgent situation.
Soft Tissue Injuries Lacerations to the gums, lips, cheeks, or tongue from a fall or impact should be rinsed with warm water and evaluated. Significant bleeding that doesn't slow with pressure warrants a trip to the emergency room as well as a call to our office.
Object Caught Between Teeth If something is lodged between your teeth and you cannot remove it with floss, don't use sharp objects to dig it out. Call us — we can remove it quickly and without damaging the gum tissue.
What To Do While You're Waiting To Be Seen
For pain: Over-the-counter ibuprofen (if you can take it) is more effective for dental pain than acetaminophen because it addresses both pain and inflammation. Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum — it can burn the tissue.
For swelling: A cold compress applied to the outside of the face in 10-minute intervals can reduce swelling and provide some relief.
For a knocked-out tooth: Keep it moist. Time matters more than anything else.
For a lost crown: Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can reseat the crown and protect the tooth until your appointment. Clean the inside of the crown, apply a small amount of cement, and gently seat it. Don't use super glue.
Why Prompt Treatment Matters
The most common mistake patients make with dental emergencies is waiting. Pain that subsides on its own doesn't mean the problem resolved — it often means the nerve has died, which eliminates the pain signal but leaves the infection and structural damage untreated. Problems that could have been addressed with a filling become root canals. Problems that could have been root canals become extractions. Acting quickly nearly always means simpler, less expensive treatment.
